Tourists generated more than US$7,000 million for the country

The Tourism Minister, David Collado, reported yesterday that 491,788 tourists visited in October from 2022 to the Dominican Republic.

During the presentation of the usual report on this sector, Collado explained that this amount of travelers who arrived in the country last month exceeds those who arrived for the same date in 2018 and 2019.

“We did it again and in what way, with the arrival of 119,582 more tourists than in 2019. It is the second consecutive October that we break records, something truly historic,” said Collado when presenting the report at a hotel in the National District.

In addition, he specified that In the first 10 months of this year, 5,826,078 arrived in the countrywhich generated more than US$7,000 million.

For the period January-October the country received, by air, the arrival of 5,826,078 travelers.

Meanwhile, the cruise industry also registered notable growth, with the arrival of 88,178 visitors in the month of October.

In this context, he stated that Amber Cove surpassed passenger arrivals in October with 49,342, followed by Taíno Bay with 26, 100 in 11 operations, La Romana Port with 10,589 and Sans Soucí Port of Santo Domingo, 2,147 in 13 tourist boat operations. He said that in October alone, the arrival of visitors generated more than 517 million in foreign currency.

“This means that in the first 10 months of this year the arrival of visitors contributed US$7,278 million to our economy,” the official said. Likewise, he highlighted that this year will end with the arrival of more than 7,000,000 tourists and with revenues that will exceed USD8,000 million.

When talking about the hotel occupancy and with 90% of housing availability, he maintained that there was a 64%obtaining the destination Romana-Bayahibe 81%, Bávaro-Punta Cana 68%, Samaná 61%, Boca Chica-Juan Dolio 54% and Greater Santo Domingo 60%.

The Vice Minister of Tourism, Jacqueline Mora, reported that of that amount, 400,357 correspond to foreigners and 91,430 to Dominicans. She commented that the growth is despite the change in trend in Eastern and Central Europe, due to the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Savings of RD$8,000 million
The official said on Monday that this institution has saved around RD$8,000 million in the international promotion of the Dominican Republic.

Collado stressed that this materialized in the last two years. “I can also say today that the savings of the Ministry of Tourism in international promotion, are around almost RD $ 8,000 million in two years that we have at the head of this institution”, expressed the head.

He commented that the importance of giving a balance of the arrival of tourists to the country, is to invent entrepreneurs and the private sector, as well as to correct which markets should be strengthened, the efforts made in foreign promotion.

In addition, it was highlighted that in the period January-September of this year 5,334,291 visitors arrived, some 346,596 tourists more than the 4,987,698 for the same period in 2019. From January to October there was a record of 6.72 million tourists in the country, of which 5,826,078 were tourists and 894,419 hikers.

The other 2% that remains includes another type of reason for travel, not specified by the tourism institution.

These tourists found out about this destination mostly through their friends and family, through the internet and others through travel agencies.

They also come from the United States, Canada, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Poland, Brazil and Chile.

By October 2019, some 372,205 visited the Dominican Republic, prior to Covid-19.

In October 2020, a mere 138,276 visitors arrived. At that time there were health restrictions due to the pandemic.

Last year 443,016 arrived in the country, as a real example of the recovery and growth of the important sector in the Dominican economy, due to the measures adopted in the DR.
