Asturias is preparing to receive the great figures of the peloton on its roads with the Asturian cycling event par excellence: the Tour of Asturias Julio Álvarez Mendo, which for many will also be the last test before competing next week in the Giro from Italy.

Stages, profiles and routes of the Vuelta a Asturias 2023

Stage 1: Oviedo – Pola de Lena (Friday, April 28)

The Vuelta a Asturias 2023 will begin with a 181-kilometre route between Oviedo and Pola de Lena. The runners will face the first section of the stage with the Alto de la Gargantada (3rd) as the main difficulty before the race hardens with the toughest climb of the day, the Alto de la Colladona, first category with its 6, 9 kilometers at 6.6%. After their descent, the runners will enter the last 40 kilometers where they will have to face the climbs to La Cabaña (3rd), Fresneo (3rd) and Alto de Carabanzo, second category with its 2.1 kilometers at 9.8% that will crown 7 kilometers from the finish line before a rapid descent towards the finish in Pola de Lena.

Stage 2: Candás – Cangas del Narcea (Saturday, April 29)

The great mountain stage of this edition in the Vuelta a Asturias will take place this Saturday on a route of 183 kilometers between Candás and Cangas del Narcea. In the initial section, the cyclists will have the ascent to Cabruñana (3rd) before the road begins to climb steadily upwards to face the ascent to Vallado (2nd, 3.7 kilometers at 9.9%) and, after its descent, to the demanding Alto del Acebo, first class with its 8.7 kilometers at 7.4%. After crowning, the cyclists will face a rapid descent towards the finish line of Cangas del Narcea.

Stage 3: Cangas del Narcea – Oviedo (Sunday, April 30)

La Vueltina 2023 will end with a day with various levels on a 147-kilometre route between Cangas del Narcea and Oviedo. The climb to Tineo (2nd, 7.1 kilometers at 5.7%) could encourage those brave enough to try it from afar before entering the second part of the stage with the climb to El Escamplero (3rd) and, above all , with the climb to Tenebreo, second category with its 3.1 kilometers at 9.1% that could encourage one of the favorites to try it 20 kilometers from the finish line in Oviedo.

Teams and participants of the Vuelta a Asturias 2023

A total of 15 teams will take the start in the Vuelta a Asturias. Movistar will be the only UCI World Tour team to compete in the race in an event that will also include nine UCI ProTeam teams: the Spanish Burgos-BH, Caja Rural – Seguros RGA, Kern Pharma and Euskaltel-Euskadi; the Italian Eolo Kometa, the American Novo Nordisk, the New Zealand Bolton Equities Black Spoke, the French TotalEnergies and the Swiss Q36.5. The list of teams is completed by Efapel, Hipermarché-Hiper Europa, Aviludo Louletano LouleConcelho, Golbal 6 and NSJBI Victoria Sports.

In this way, a total of 105 riders will start this Friday in the Vuelta a Asturias 2023.

The favorites to win the Vuelta a Asturias 2023

The Colombians from Movistar Einer Rubio and Iván Sosa, the latter champion of the race in 2022, start as rivals to beat in a race where they will face off against runners such as José Manuel Díaz, Víctor Langelotti, Mikel Bizkarra, Lorenzo Fortunato, Julen Amezqueta , Abel Balderstone, Steff Cras and Alejandro Ropero, who also start as favorites for the final victory.
