Tottenham Suffers Historic 5-2 Defeat to Atletico Madrid Amid Managerial Crisis

Atletico Madrid defeated Tottenham Hotspur 5-2 on Tuesday at the Estadio Metropolitano in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie. The loss marks Tottenham’s sixth consecutive defeat across all competitions, establishing the longest losing streak in the club’s nearly 144-year history.

The European collapse compounds an ongoing domestic crisis for Tottenham. The London club currently sits 16th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone. Interim head coach Igor Tudor, appointed on February 14, has lost his first four matches in charge.

Tudor started 22-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky in place of regular starter Guglielmo Vicario. Kinsky slipped to concede the opening goal and later kicked a clearance off his own leg, directly resulting in Atletico’s third goal. Tudor substituted Kinsky 17 minutes into the match.

Tottenham conceded three goals in the first 15 minutes. Defender Micky van de Ven also slipped on the pitch, leading to Atletico’s second goal. Data analytics firm Opta recorded that Tottenham committed four errors leading to goals in the first half alone.

This defensive performance ties a Champions League record for errors leading to goals in a single match. The statistic was last recorded when BATE Borisov suffered a 6-0 loss to Porto in 2014.

Tudor publicly admitted that domestic survival, rather than advancing in European sports, is the organization’s primary focus moving forward.
