Torrential rains cause flooding in Haiti

Hundreds of people have crowded into a shelter in Haiti, as authorities declared Wednesday that it was difficult to bring them drinking water and to reach communities affected by intense flooding.

At least four people have died and one is missing after a cold front swept across northern and southern Haiti on Sunday, unleashing torrential downpours that caused flooding and winds so strong they felled trees.

More than 2,580 houses were damaged and some 500 people sought shelter in a temporary shelter in Fort Liberte, a city on the north coast of Haiti.

The Haitian Civil Protection Agency reported that the victims urgently need water, food and blankets.

In the neighboring Dominican Republic, at least one death was reported, according to the newspaper Listín Diario.
