Tondela kicked off their new season with a flourish, bringing home their first trophy from Spanish soil. They battled hard against Racing de Ferrol, a team from Galicia, securing a dramatic 5-4 victory. The win came down to a tense penalty shootout after the teams were locked at two goals apiece at the end of regular time. This exciting match, the XXVI edition of the Victoria “Memorial Moncho Rivera” Tournament, took place at the Estádio A Malata. Interestingly, Racing de Ferrol shares a common thread with Tondela; the same ownership group holds a majority stake in both clubs, adding an extra layer to the friendly rivalry.
The game itself was a showcase of late drama. Hugo Félix put Tondela ahead early in the first half. Then, as the clock wound down, Xabi Huarte found the net for Tondela, forcing the match into a penalty shootout. When it came to the spot kicks, Tondela’s players were clinical. Xabi Huarte, Bebeto, Afonso Rodrigues, Joe Hodge, and Pedro Maranhão all converted their penalties without a hitch, sealing the win. This friendly also served a good cause, bringing the community together. Coach Ivo Vieira used the opportunity to give playing time to those who don’t always make the starting lineup, testing out various combinations.
