As if it were a modern Don Quixote, the British actor Tom Hardy (London, 1977) takes on the role of journalist Eddie Brock and the supervillain Venom in “Venom: Let there be carnage” ("Venom: there will be carnage") the second installment of the Marvel saga that arrives in Spain this Friday.
The figure of Cervantes and his famous novel have served as inspiration for this film by the actor and director Andy Serkis and it has a small reference in the film, since, according to Hardy in an interview with Efe, the couple formed by Quijote and Sancho and that of Eddie and Venom share the same essence.
“The two were very different beings. One is a realist and the other a fanciful, but they kept going on adventures together because they coexisted with each other, ”says Hardy.
Venom is a symbiote -a being of black color, and viscous texture that “lodges” in other people’s beings- and arrived at the Earth during an alien attack, where, after being captured by laboratories to carry out experiments, it ended up fusing with the body. reporter Eddie Brock’s human body during one of his investigations.
In this way, Venom gave Brock superpowers and special abilities, thus beginning his peculiar and stormy love-hate relationship, which in the first film already cost him the love of his particular Dulcinea: Anne Weying (Michelle Williams).
“Venom: Let there be Carnage” continues the common thread that was glimpsed during the post-credits scene of the first installment, where the character of the serial killer Cletus Kasady, played by the actor Woody Harrelson, and who takes an antagonistic role in this second part as “Carnage”.
In Hardy’s opinion, the cliché that second parts were never good is not fulfilled in “Venom: Let there be Carnage”, as he considers it to be a “better than the first” film and trusts that viewers will also think so. himself, after the “tomatazos” launched by critics with the debut of “Venom”.
“I’m very proud of her and what Andy (Serkis) and the rest of the team have managed to do with the vision of the film,” which delves more deeply into the emotional side of the Hardy and Harrelson characters.
Before filming the first part, Hardy had already contacted his good friend Serkis to talk about Venom’s “imaginary”, so he did not hesitate to turn to him years later to propose, this time, to take the reins of its sequel.
Serkis did not hesitate to accept the project, because, as he tells Efe, upon reading the script, he felt that it was the “correct piece to join” with Hardy, whom he praised for his performance in the first installment.
In addition, he adds that sitting in the director’s chair is much easier as an actor, since it can create “an atmosphere where the actors feel comfortable when working.”
The coronavirus pandemic forced the filming of a film that arrives a year later than initially planned to be halted, but Hardy admits to having learned a lot throughout the process, such as that “communication is key” and that perhaps what is planned It is not what ends up coming out.
In any case, Venom and Hardy are back three years later with a new installment of quixotic adventures, although instead of facing the windmills of La Mancha, they will have to do it with alien supervillains with the streets of the American city of San Francisco as a backdrop. background.
