Lima (BLAZETRENDS).- Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), in pretrial detention while being tried for a case of alleged corruption, was transferred from the jail where he remains an inmate to a hospital in Lima to receive emergency care due to a hypertensive crisis, health sources reported.
“Toledo was discharged after receiving emergency care at Hospital II de Vitarte for a hypertensive crisis, which occurred during a scheduled medical appointment,” the Social Security of Health of Peru (Essalud) published on Twitter.
Sources close to Toledo explained to BLAZETRENDS that the doctors “have to check his heart.” They detailed that they are waiting for more news.
The National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) details in a statement that the former president was initially transferred to the health center. “In response to appointments scheduled in advance in the cardiology, gastroenterology and urology services.”
“In compliance with the security protocols, the referred inmate was returned to the Barbadillo prison,” the information added.
The ex-governor remained for approximately one hour in the social security hospital in the Lima district of Ate, close to the Barbadillo penitentiary center where he is being held, and then he was removed in a wheelchair by prison agents and the National Police to be taken back to the prison in an ambulance, according to the images of Canal N.
The case of Alejandro Toledo
Toledo extradited from the US last April for processing in Lima. For allegedly having received 34 million dollars (about 31.7 million euros) in bribes from the Brazilian company Odebrecht. To award several sections in the construction of the southern Interoceanic highway, in addition to another case of real estate purchases through the company Ecoteva.
Last May, Judge Richard Concepción Carhuancho declared the objection of inadmissibility of action requested by Toledo’s lawyer, Roberto Su, inadequate to exclude him from the crime of collusion.
The judge also declared that “the conduct attributed to Alejandro Toledo would have criminal relevance in this case.” He also prosecuted for money laundering.
The magistrate pointed out in his resolution that, according to the Public Ministry’s accusation, the former president had intervened in a “collusive pact” with Odebrecht. And that he “would have infringed one of his duties, to protect the interests of the State, by agreeing with the interested party.”
In mid-May, the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office began the request for the active extradition and preventive detention of Toledo’s wife, Eliane Karp, with the sending of the official letter by the head of the team investigating the Lava Jato case in Peru, Rafael Vela, to the president of the Ninth Liquidating Criminal Chamber of the Court of Lima, Araceli Baca Cabrera.
Karp, who lived in the US with her husband, recently moved to Israel.
