Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire recently took a legal step regarding his son, Otis. He asked for shared custody, nearly a decade after he and his former wife, Jennifer Meyer, went their separate ways. It’s a move that highlights their ongoing commitment to co-parenting.
Court documents obtained by Us Weekly on Friday, August 1, show Maguire filed his request on Thursday, July 31. This was his response to Meyer’s initial divorce filing back in 2020. In his papers, the 50-year-old actor requested equal legal and physical custody of Otis, who is now 15. The former couple also shares an 18-year-old daughter, Ruby. Maguire also suggested that decisions about child and spousal support should be handled through private mediation.
Maguire and Meyer, 48, first met in 2003. They tied the knot four years later in a lovely ceremony in Hawaii. After nine years of marriage, they announced their separation in October 2016.
“After much thought and consideration, we’ve decided to separate as a couple,” they told Us Weekly at the time. “As dedicated parents, our main focus remains raising our children together with lasting love, respect, and friendship.” Their statement set a clear tone for their post-split relationship.
Two years after their separation, Meyer spoke openly about how she and Maguire managed their lives apart. She described their bond as unbreakable.
“He’s my best friend,” she shared with Us Weekly in January 2018. “He’s the best ex-husband a girl could ever wish for.”
The jewelry designer added that co-parenting their kids was always their top concern. “The day starts with the kids and ends with the kids,” she explained. “So you find your time and work hard in between, you know? They are truly amazing children, and we figure things out together. It just works out really well.”
Us Weekly confirmed in November 2020 that Meyer officially filed for divorce from Maguire. This came four years after they initially separated. Two years after that, Meyer confessed she still had deep affection for her former husband.
“I can’t even explain it. I would literally do anything in the world for Tobey. He’s my brother. I love him to death, and we have the most beautiful family,” she said on “The World’s First Podcast” in 2022.
Life has moved forward for both of them. Last year, Meyer shared happy news: she got engaged to Geoffrey Ogunlesi. Geoffrey is the son of Nigerian billionaire Adebayo Ogunlesi.
She excitedly posted on social media in September 2024, sharing photos with Geoffrey. “YES!!! ♥️♾️✨,” she wrote on Instagram.
Maguire, for his part, has been linked to model Lily Chee.
Despite their individual paths, Maguire and Meyer still come together for their children. Earlier this year, they reunited to celebrate Ruby’s high school graduation. Meyer posted a heartfelt message on Instagram along with several pictures of Ruby’s big day.
“Congratulations, Ruby!!!!! ♥️ Graduate of our dreams,” Meyer wrote in her post. “We are so proud of you in every way. We love you, love you, love you, love you, love you, baby 🥰♥️.” This moment clearly showed their ongoing family strength and unity.
