Sony Sues Tencent: Light of Motiram Allegedly Copies Horizon Game IP

A major legal battle is brewing in the gaming world. Sony has gone to court against Tencent, claiming one of Tencent’s new games copies Sony’s own work.

Reports from Reuters recently shed light on this dispute. Sony Interactive Entertainment filed a lawsuit in a California state court. They accuse Tencent of creating a game called “Light of Motiram” that copies ideas from Sony’s “Horizon” game series. Guerrilla Games, a studio under Sony PlayStation, developed the Horizon series.

Sony’s lawsuit states that “Light of Motiram” is a copycat game. It claims the gameplay, story themes, and art style are very similar to the “Horizon” series. Many other elements are also supposedly alike. Here’s a twist: Sony’s filing also says they turned down Tencent’s offer in 2024 to work together on a new “Horizon” game. Soon after, Tencent announced “Light of Motiram.”

Sony is asking for an unrevealed amount of money in damages. They also want the court to order Tencent to stop using their ideas. So far, neither Sony Interactive nor Tencent has commented further on the lawsuit.

It remains to be seen how this case will play out. Will Tencent continue developing and releasing the game? Or will they reach a settlement outside of court? This is definitely one to keep an eye on.
