Timor-Leste Eliminated From Asian Cup Qualifiers by Philippines

Timor-Leste has been eliminated from the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers following a 3-1 defeat to the Philippines, marking a disappointing start for new head coach Zé Pedro.

The loss occurred Tuesday in Manila, solidifying Timor-Leste’s early exit from the regional competition. It was Zé Pedro’s second match in charge; his debut five days prior also resulted in a significant 4-1 home loss to the Philippines.

Timor-Leste currently sits third in Group A with just three points. This places them far behind co-leaders Philippines and Tajikistan, both holding 10 points. With only two match days remaining, representing a maximum of six points, Timor-Leste can no longer advance.

During Tuesday’s match, Timor-Leste initially took a 1-0 lead just before halftime through João Rangel in the 45+1 minute. However, the Philippines quickly equalized after the break with a goal from Tabinas in the 47th minute. Kristensen then put the Philippines ahead in the 70th minute, followed by Gayoso, who sealed the 3-1 victory in the 90th minute.

The 2027 AFC Asian Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia. The top six teams from the six qualification groups will join 18 nations that have already secured their spots in the tournament. Among the qualified teams are Oman, coached by Carlos Queiroz, and Kuwait, led by Hélio Sousa.
