TikTok tops the world’s most downloaded apps

Would Facebook be stripped of its title? According to a world ranking established by App Annie, broadcast by Nikkei Asia, TikTok topped the world’s most downloaded apps in 2020. A first for the Chinese app, which ranked fourth in 2019, the mobile data analytics company says.

Thus, the developer of the Chinese social network, ByteDance, “launched the international version of TikTok in 2017 and since then it has surpassed Facebook (2nd), WhatsApp (3rd), Instagram (4th) and Facebook Messenger (5th) (all of them they belong to Facebook) in number of downloads, even in the United States ”, also reports the Japanese media. Additionally, “TikTok’s total watch time in the US and UK is longer than YouTube’s,” said Chuzen Kin, Marketing Manager at App Annie.

The TikTok application has particularly gained popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic and has become the leader in downloaded applications, particularly in Europe and South America. But also in the United States, despite the numerous attacks by Donald Trump. In 2020, the former president of the United States had demanded that the Chinese social network be under American control to remain accessible in the United States. A decision finally overturned by Joe Biden last June.

In addition, Snapchat (6th), Telegram (7th), Pinterest (9th) and Twitter (10th) complete the 10 most downloaded applications in the world. In eighth place, we find Likee, TikTok’s direct Chinese competitor. In fact, this application is gaining popularity, especially among companies that use it to make videos for marketing purposes.
