TikTok raises minimum age for live streaming and announces adult-only streams

TikTok is raising the minimum age for live streaming on its platform and launching adult-only live streams, according to was announced the company.

Currently, you must be 16 years of age or older to stream live. From the 23rd of November, users will have to be 18 years old to go live on the platform.

About the adults-only live streamsTikTok plans to release them in the coming weeks.

TikTok’s new restriction on live streaming for 18+ is not a way for users to stream adult content, as the content is still subject to the app’s policies. Instead, it’s a way of Creators prevent minors from finding content that is intended for an adult audience or that may be uninteresting to them.

“We plan to introduce a new way for creators to choose whether they prefer to target only an adult audience in their LIVES”the company said in a blog post. “For example, perhaps a humorous monologue would be more suitable for over 18s. Or, a presenter might plan to talk about a difficult life experience and feel more comfortable knowing that the conversation is limited to adults.”

The new adjustment comes a few months after TikTok said it wanted to start identifying what content is appropriate for younger and older teens versus adults.

In addition, TikTok will launch a updated version of keyword filtering tool which will send users a reminder and suggest new keywords they can add to the filter list.

Creators can already use the app’s keyword filtering tool to limit comments they deem inappropriate, but this update will take this feature one step further.

“To do this, the tool analyzes the content that a creator removes most often from their LIVE, detecting similar words in those comments and suggesting that the creator wants to add those words to their filter list”TikTok explained in their blog post.

“When we tested this feature, we found that it nearly doubled those using keyword filtering when looking at the most popular DIRECT creators.”

TikTok is also releasing a new feature called “Multi-Guest” which allows creators to go live with up to five other people using a grid or panel layout. The new feature can be used to present how-to videos, answer questions, or simply share a moment together.

Once the live stream begins, creators can tap the three dots to change a variety of settings, such as flipping the camera, adding effects and stickers, filtering comments, and adding moderators.
