TikTok moves forward with new changes in its commitment to privacy

TikTok, the leading platform for short-form mobile video, continues in its commitment to the privacy and security of its community. To do this, he has entered changes to its privacy policy so that users can make their own decisions on how they want their experience on the platform to be.

The objective of the social network is to inspire creativity to generate moments of joy. Additionally, you want to support your community to confidently discover, create, and enjoy entertaining content, while helping them understand the information you collect and how you use it. That is why privacy is built into the platform from its design. And on the other hand, it offers people meaningful knowledge about the information they share on TikTok.

The platform, which reviews and strengthens the protection tools it offers its community, including industry-first measures to protect user privacy, previously announced similar measures. What set user accounts under 16 as private by default years or the strengthening privacy for those under 18 years of age. Likewise, it has launched its local bet plans in relation to data protection through the creation of a new data center in Ireland in which all the data of the European users of the platform will be stored and which will be operating by the end of 2022.

Privacy Policies, even easier to understand

Transparency is key in TikTok’s approach to privacy. The company wants to ensure that the community can clearly understand the information it collects, how it is used and how it is shared, so that people can make informed decisions about their own privacy settings.

And the company already does it in several ways, including on its Security and Privacy page, in its Security Center where his approach to the data is explained to help in education and dissemination within the community about the privacy options that users have available. It also has a summary of its Privacy Policies, easier to read for minors, between 13 and 18 years old, and next month it will launch a new section, called ‘Privacy Highlights for Teens’.

These new “Privacy Highlights” are made up of a series of simple videos that explain all the key elements about the collection and use of platform user data. These videos will be shown to new members under the age of 18 who join the community and a pop-up will also be sent to current members to encourage them to check out the highlights.

Greater transparency

In pursuit of greater transparency, TikTok has also announced changes to its European privacy policy. It does not include any modification regarding the collection, processing or storage of the data, despite this, it includes news regarding its wording, making it easier to read, use and navigate through it.

Among the most notable changes, TikTok has added the current privacy policy in force in Europe to an independent website and the design has been restructured, adding new navigation options to facilitate reading. More details have also been added about the data that the platform collects, how it is used and how it is shared, and more information has been added about the privacy rights of users, including links with instructions on how the community can exercise their rights. Finally, a section has been created that explains the legal bases and the types of information that TikTok uses for each of the processing purposes.

Constant improvements in policies and resources

Our goal is to constantly improve the policies, tools and resources available to our community, but we know that making our policies easier to understand is only the first step. We are committed to educating and empowering our community to use them.

Along these lines, TikTok has also announced the launch of a new educational campaign that will be available throughout Europe in the coming months. This campaign will aim to help the platform community better understand the privacy options available in the application, as well as the decisions they can make on this matter on TikTok. As the company continues to work along these lines, it remains on the lookout for feedback from the community, NGOs, regulators, and other key partners.
