TikTok celebrates 2021 with its most relevant milestones

TikTok, the short-format mobile video platform, has taken stock of 2021, its third year since it landed in Spain. A year full of entertainment, fun and creativity and in which some historical milestones have been achieved for the platform, such as exceeding one billion users worldwide.

2021 has been a year in which trends crossed the barriers of TikTok and traveled the world, overcoming language, geographical and cultural differences, through the universal language of video. Thus, Generation T (ikTok), connected with communities to share their passions, through hashtags such as #BookTok, #LearnWithTikTok or #SportsEnTikTok.

Security, top priority for TikTok

As one of its most important pillars, this year TikTok has also continued to advance in the field of security, especially with projects that are born and have their focus at the local level. In this sense, in 2021 TikTok partnered with ScreensGirlfriends to launch the “TikTok Guide for Parents” with the aim of promoting parents’ knowledge about the platform’s security features and promoting responsible behavior in the digital environment. Along the same lines, the company has launched together with the ANAR Foundation, the bell #SecurityDigital. A project to promote digital literacy to more than 7,000 young people in schools in Madrid, Castilla y León and in the Valencian Community.

Likewise, TikTok has also reinforced privacy and security of its users throughout 2021, reducing the spread of unverified content, launching tools to comfighting bullying or empowering the community in making decisions about privacy, among others.

TikTok, an entertainment platform

2021 has undoubtedly been the year of soccer on TikTok. Users have come to the platform to share their passion for the beautiful game, but also to demystify stereotypes, and to create creative content around the sport. With campaigns like #PlayLikeGirls, the arrival of world stars like Fernando Torres to the platform and, of course, the sponsorship of the UEFA EURO 2020 that brought with it collaborations with characters of the stature of Manolo el del Bombo and the TikTok’s first television campaign in Spain.

Beyond sports, TikTok is a space where the community connects through what they are passionate about. The trends are born on TikTok and travel the world, bringing Spanish culture and art to a global audience, overcoming geographic and linguistic barriers with the commons of video. Thus, we must not forget the important work of cultural dissemination that occurs on TikTok, specifically speaking of El National Museum of the Prado which in 2021 had a leading role as a local representative on International Museum Day, participating in the largest live TikTok LIVE in history, 23 hours of broadcasting, with an exclusive live visit for all TikTok users.

Music at the heart of TikTok

TikTok is a platform that invites discovery, and where music plays a fundamental role, either inspiring content or serving as a common thread.

On TikTok, the great stars of music share a bill with new talents, and where the successes of the past return with a creative twist. In this way, we cannot close TikTok 2021 without talking about music on TikTok. This year we have been lucky enough to see artists like Raphael or Alejandro Sanz joining the platform now Old Morla reach an important milestone, being the first Spanish band to hold a live concert with resounding success through TikTok LIVE.

Brands, a fundamental pillar of the TikTok community

Another of the key players this year have been the brands that have come to the platform to connect with new audiences, to be leaders in digital marketing and to demonstrate their pioneering value in innovation within the platform. Very relevant examples such as the shipping company Balearia, becoming the first Spanish company in the tourism sector to do a Hashtag Challenge on TikTok with the trend #SummerIsOur, or the Palladium Hotel group which was the first Spanish hotel chain to join TikTok.

SMEs have also had their place on TikTok during 2021. Small local companies such as Navarrete Online (@ navarreteonline.com) that has created a community of almost 200,000 people, multiplying its sales by 8, or digital native companies such as Need Car Help (@needcarhelp) that after going viral on the platform has experienced tremendous growth.

Finally, on a corporate level, 2021 has also been a year full of milestones for TikTok. In addition to exceeding one billion users worldwide and launching its first television spot on the occasion of the Eurocup, this year the platform has also launched its first brand campaign under the slogan “You don’t know everything about TikTok” to show the whole of Spain the real value of the platform through content uploaded by the users themselves. In addition, this campaign will be accompanied by first prizes that the platform celebrates in Spain and that will award, on December 21, the best local TikTok creators.
