There’s a familiar story in football, a moment when the heart pulls one way and ambition another. For Tiago Gouveia, that moment is now. The 24-year-old winger is leaving Benfica, the club he calls home, for a new challenge. He’s heading to Nice, a French club, in a move that signals the end of his time in Lisbon.
Gouveia’s transfer is structured as a loan. However, Nice is committed to buying him once the loan period finishes. This means his long association with the Eagles will soon be over for good. He spoke to NOW about his feelings regarding the switch. “It’s a sadness to leave the club of my heart,” Gouveia admitted, his words carrying a bittersweet tone.
Despite the sadness, Gouveia is excited for what lies ahead. He sees this new step as a crucial part of his career journey. “I’m very happy for this new chapter,” he explained. “It’s a fresh challenge, and I feel very enthusiastic about it. I truly believe this will be very good for my career.” At 24, playing regularly is his priority. “I want to be happy playing,” he stressed. “Of course, I was happy at the club where I was.” He made it clear he’s seeking more playing time. “I will look for a challenge where I can have more minutes,” Gouveia stated, “and where I can truly show my football.”
As he prepared to leave, Gouveia extended his best wishes to Benfica. He hoped the Lisbon giants would enjoy a season filled with trophies. He also touched on his limited minutes this season, but he didn’t point fingers. “It’s not for me to say,” he remarked. “That’s for the coach, the board, and everyone involved to discuss.” His focus remains positive. “I’m very happy about this step,” Gouveia said. “I wish the best of luck in the world to Benfica and to all my friends there.” He also expressed his gratitude to the fans. “I want to thank you all for the support,” he added. “I always felt so much affection, so much happiness.” His loyalty, he assured, will never waver. “I will always be a Benfica fan,” Gouveia promised. “They will always be in my heart.”
