The French countryside proved challenging for Tiago Antunes at the recent European Championships. The Portuguese rider, part of a four-man national team selection, did not finish the road race. His compatriots also did not cross the finish line. Still, Antunes feels proud of his call-up to the national squad, especially after his strong fifth-place finish in the Volta a Portugal.
The race started with a setback for the Portuguese team. António Morgado was not in shape to compete. This meant the team began the difficult race already short-handed. Antunes knew it would be tough. There were many strong teams and favorites expected to attack early. The team tried to prepare for this, but it was not enough.
Antunes, a cyclist for Efapel, found himself in the main breakaway group. He explained that he was perhaps the least marked rider on his team. This gave him more freedom to try and join an early escape. He wanted to be at the front and help the team, so he took his chance.
Then, the race changed. The breakaway’s two-minute lead vanished quickly. Star riders like Pogacar and Evenepoel appeared. Antunes noted that when the top favorites attack, there is little anyone can do. They made the race much harder, pushing the pace on the main climb. Following them became nearly impossible. Antunes tried to stay with the chasing group, but he could not.
He felt the frustration of not finishing, especially with the 10-minute rule in place for circuit races. After riding 180 kilometers, it is difficult to be stopped because of a time limit. Antunes said this rule makes it complicated for him, the team, and everyone who worked hard to get them there.
Looking back, Antunes sees his season as very positive. He felt consistent throughout the year. He considers his selections for the World Championships in Rwanda and the European Championships as a “gift.” These call-ups honored his dedication and effort.
Now, Antunes plans to rest. He hopes to start the next season strong in the Figueira and Algarve races. He enjoys these high-level competitions and aims to stand out there. He will remain with Efapel for another year. Antunes hopes the team’s new signings will be good. He believes together they can have a great season.
