Jueves del recuerdo

My friend Rolando Sebelén, an immortal in Dominican sports due to his great record in bowling, sends me this historical photo that shows Juan Marichal and Felipe Alou upon their arrival in Santo Domingo in 1960. They arrived at the General Andrews airport, which was located in the land occupied by Listin Diario today, Miraflores sector.

Note that they dressed elegantly, not like many players today who ignore that they are idols for children and adults but set a bad example.

Felipe, who debuted in 1958, welcomed Marichal when he came to the San Francisco Giants in 1960. They were together there until 1963, when Felipe was traded to Milwaukee.

And how did Felipe go against Marichal, when they were in opposing clubs? The data says that he had 59 at-bats against Juan, 18 hits, .305 average, 3 home runs, 5 RBIs. Right now, Marichal is 84 years old, Felipe 86.

GIVING FOLDER: The first full month of the 2022 Major League season, which began exactly on April 7, is not yet complete. (That is, it will be this Saturday the 7th when they reach 30 days).

Going into last night’s game, the New York Yankees had 11 straight wins and overall it was the club’s best start in a long time. And what is the reason for this great streak that gives them a record of 18-6?

Obviously they occupy privileged positions in the groups of the league. They have the best batting average with .251, first in home runs with 34, 1st. in races with 118.

And only three of his guys stand out in brilliant fashion: first baseman Anthony Rizzo (.253-9-21 and .369 OBP), outfielder Aaron Judge (.303.9-19 and .361 OBP), and some Giancarlo Stanton. (.267-5-16). Mr. Punch, Joey Gallo, has been recovering somewhat from his rough start, but he’s .180-2-3. And his best average is the short Kiner Falefa with .311, something that was not in the budget.

In pitching, his ERA of 2.62 is also the best in the AL and they maintain their five-man rotation: Gerrit Cole, Néstor Cortés, Luis Sverino, Jameson Taillon and Jordan Montgomery, three righties, two lefties. Follow the Yankees, who look like they’re running for 100 wins.
