Three US soldiers killed in drone strike in Jordan

Three US soldiers were killed and 25 others injured in a suicide drone strike by suspected pro-Iranian militias in Jordan near the border with Syria last night, according to US forces.

“Three US soldiers were killed and 25 injured in a unilateral unmanned air strike on a base in northeastern Jordan near the border with Syria,” the US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.

The victims’ identities were not released “out of respect for the families” and in line with Defense Department policy, the statement said. They must wait up to 24 hours after notifying their relatives.

United States President Joe Biden has already expressed condolences for the attack, which he blamed on “pro-Iranian militias” operating in Syria and Iraq, according to a statement from the White House.

Military sources quoted by the American television channel CNN said that the attack took place at the base called Tower 22.

It is the first attack in which US soldiers have been killed in the Middle East since the current escalation of the conflict in the Gaza Strip began. However, attacks on US bases in Syria and Iraq are relatively common and 158 incidents have been reported since October 17, none of them serious.
