Thousands of Salvadoran teachers take to the streets of San Salvador

Thousands of Salvadoran teachers have taken to the streets of San Salvador this Wednesday to demand from the Government of Nayib Bukele a dignified retirement, access to health for teachers with chronic illnesses and to dignify the profession by increasing salaries in the public education system.

to the cry of "there is nothing to celebrate this June 22"on Teacher’s Day in El Salvador, teachers have once again demanded from the Ministry of Education (MINED) and deputies of the Legislative Assembly a salary that allows them to live and have highlighted: "we want decent pensions, not starvation"to demand a pension that can sustain their families.

The general secretary of the Union of Teachers of Public Education in El Salvador (SIMEDUCO), Francisco Zelada, has indicated that part of the teachers’ demands is the change of the current system.

"After September 2017, the rate of return for educators in pensions ranges from 189 euros (200 dollars), a pension that does not allow educators to retire and those who have already retired face serious economic crises due to the cost of the life"Zelada explained.

The trade unionist has also asked the Education authorities to convene a meeting to discuss the salaries that must be reviewed in 2022 and that is established in article 33 of the Teaching Career Law.

"The central demand is a decent and fair pension because the pensions that are reaching teachers are 250 euros (265 dollars) and many of them have illnesses that need medical attention and it turns out that the Salvadoran Institute of Teacher Discomfort does not attend"has sentenced the general secretary of the Salvadoran Magisterial Bases, Jorge Villegas.
