A woman decided to start a fundraiser to pay off the medical debts of thousands of people in the United States.
Casey Ryan McIntyre had ovarian cancer and her prognosis wasn’t great, so she came up with the idea of leaving a legacy with her death.
She announced her death on November 14th with a message that she planned to post on her social networks.
“A note to my friends: If you are reading this, it means I died… I loved each and every one of you with all my heart and I promise you that I knew how much you loved me,” he says in the message posted on Instagram.
This 38-year-old woman confirmed she was leaving, but behind it was a plan that would change the lives of thousands of people.
Casey wanted to help strangers pay their expensive medical bills, so she asked for help with an in-kind donation.
She was aware that not everyone has access to quality healthcare services, as she had while battling cancer.
Casey was diagnosed with this disease in 2019, but from that moment on she maintained a positive attitude towards her condition.
Despite her difficult situation, she decided to live and enjoy the last years of her life to the fullest.
A successful fundraising campaign
So he created a page where people could support his cause, and within days he managed to raise thousands of dollars through Rip Medical Debt.
At the end of November, the amount of money had already exceeded $835,000. The best part is that every dollar donated turns into $100 toward paying off medical debt, according to the foundation.
“Casey’s family and I are stunned…. “We are overwhelmed and it’s been really impressive to see the response from people wanting to forgive strangers their medical debt,” said Andrew Gregory, Casey’s husband.
In doing so, these funds could pay off more than $63 million in debt for thousands of low-income people.
This is an extremely common problem in the United States because the country does not have a public healthcare system.
