Team DSMThe penultimate stage of the Vuelta a San Juan 2023 began with bad news for the Colombians. Just started the day, Egan Bernal left the race due to a knee injury resulting from a fall on the first day. After the Colombian retired, the competing cyclists faced the first mountain climb that gave 3 bonus points to Juan Pablo Dotti, from the Union of Public Employees of San Juan. The sprint, located in the Municipality of Ullum, was for Gerardo Tivani.
After the finish line, the mountain experts separated from the group to face the second mountain pass. More than 15 cyclists took advantage, however, the effort made in the first kilometers caused them to fall behind. With the group divided into 3 parts, Dotti took the lead and took his second bonus of the day to finish third in the mountains classification.
Seven escapees remained at the head of the race with 45 kilometers to go for the day’s finish line. After the descent of the Punta Negra Dam, the group cut the difference to less than a minute to face the intermediate sprint of the day. The winner was Tivani, from the Agrupación Virgen de Fatima – San Juan Biker Motos, who, with the points he established himself as the winner of the shirt in the absence of the final stage.
After going through the sprint finish line, the first to attack was Maximiliano Richeze who, accompanied by his brother, tried to take advantage. However, the Argentine’s escape was short and he was quickly caught up by the other escapees of the day. The last stage presented an ideal scenario for the packers, who used the fans in the peloton to stay well positioned and attack on the flat terrain. A With 17 kilometers to go to the finish line, the escapees were absorbed after more than 100 km at the top and the group was compacted for the finish.
In the definition, the squads placed their best weapons in good positions for the last meters. Trek – Segafredo, Quick Step and INEOS Grenadiers took top road placements, however Team DSM surprised with the release of Samuel Welsford, 27-year-old rider, who became the first Australian to win a stage in the Vuelta a San Juan. The podium was completed by Sam Bennett (2) and Fernando Gaviria (3). With this result, Miguel Ángel López remained the leader of the race.
