One of the biggest frustrations users have with our smartphones is the limited autonomy of their batteries.
Not only did someone think it might be a good idea to create one “Battery changing station”, but put it into practice and announced it at CES 2024. According to its makers, “It is the world’s first self-replaceable battery system for smartphones.”
The charging station This does not involve removing the internal battery from your smartphone, but rather you have to attach an external battery to the back of your smartphone. You then connect this to the USB-C port. Once that battery runs out, you simply place the phone in the dock and the dead battery will be physically replaced with one of the four fully charged batteries that can be stored.
The battery replacement process takes about seven seconds and although the company doesn't say what capacity they have, They claim that it provides between 8 and 10 hours of additional usage. Now you have to remember that in this device only the external battery is replaced, but you have to continue charging the internal battery to get good autonomy – you can use the USB-C port that contains the external battery itself.
Swapery's website is the most sensational you can find with such statements “Removes all current loading methods.” However, there is little information about the weight the external battery adds to the phone, its resistance to shock and water, etc.
We don't know the price either, but it certainly won't be cheap. It will reportedly go on sale in the second quarter of 2024.
