This Android smartphone received 7 years of updates (and it is not Xiaomi or Samsung)

Most Android smartphones stop receiving official software updates approximately two years after they are released to the market. Fortunately, this is one of the areas in which brands have improved considerably, with Samsung standing out in this aspect, followed by Xiaomi, which has also excelled in this aspect.

Although the advances mentioned above are already notorious, there are still many models that, shortly after reaching stores, end up being left aside.

It is precisely here where the smartphone Fairphone 2 enters to scene. It was designed to be as durable as possible when it comes to software updates.

Fairphone 2 receives its latest software update in March 2023

The smartphone has enjoyed seven years of uninterrupted software support, developed and distributed by company namesake – Fairphone – based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The phone continued to receive software updates all this time with new versions of the Android operating system as well as security updates.

Although the device was designed from scratch with this premise, that of being able to be updated whenever its technical characteristics allowed it, nothing suggested that this would really happen. Especially in an industry as volatile as smartphones, where new models hit the market every couple of months.

However, the mobile device is nearing the end of its useful life and in March it will receive a last security update via OTA (over the air) for the units still in operation. It should be noted that this Android smartphone was released in 2015 by the European company, and now it has been spent on updates.

The announcement of the end of life of this equipment was made known by the brand itself at the beginning of January, through its Blog official. There, the brand also encouraged its users to recycle their smartphone, even giving them a gift OK worth 50 euros.

With that being said, I hope its long lifespan will inspire more Android manufacturers to follow suit. Goodbye and thank you for all the years of work.
