Thirty-two percent of schools in the Eastern Region are located in areas at risk due to fumigation with agrochemicals, that is, less than 1,000 meters from extensive crops that are fumigated with highly dangerous poisons.

According to members of the educational communities approached, the authorities do little or nothing in this situation. They also comment that boys and girls experience dizziness, vomiting and headaches after the fumigations that are carried out during school hours, despite the bans.

Teodolina Villalba, secretary general of the National Federation of Peasants, informed that the material condenses data on a reality lived daily in peasant communities. He stressed that the peasant organization’s struggle is for the construction of an alternative production model to agribusiness, which allows them to live with dignity and respect the environment.
For her part, Senator Esperanza MartÃnez questioned whether the precautionary principle should be set aside by the authorities, in order to protect the health and life of communities. He indicated that stories against peasant organizations are often built on false information, so it is critical to continue promoting research and debate on the harm caused by agrochemicals.
