A third-tier football club achieved an upset victory Sunday, eliminating a top-flight opponent from Portugal’s national cup competition.
Fafe, a team from Liga 3, defeated Moreirense of the Portuguese I Liga with a 1-0 score in the third round of the Taça de Portugal. The win secures Fafe’s progression to the fourth stage of the tournament.
Defender João Batista scored the decisive goal in the 67th minute of the match. His free-kick deflected off Moreirense player Marcelo, deceiving goalkeeper André Ferreira.
The first 45 minutes of play at Fafe’s home ground, Parque Municipal dos Desportos, offered few significant moments, ending in a 0-0 draw. Moreirense controlled possession but struggled to create clear scoring opportunities.
Fafe maintained an organized defense throughout the game. The team improved its ball circulation in the second half, leading to a shot on target from Ká Semedo just three minutes before Batista’s goal.
Moreirense attempted to equalize, with Rodrigo Alonso taking a dangerous shot in the final moments. However, Fafe successfully managed their lead until the final whistle.
A total of 2,283 spectators attended the match. Mário Ferreira coaches Fafe, while Vasco Botelho da Costa leads Moreirense. Ricardo Baixinho officiated the game, issuing yellow cards to players from both teams.
