Thieves are using AirTags to locate sophisticated vehicles

According to Canadian police, thieves are using Apple AirTags to steal high-end cars.

According to a Press release York Regional Police, investigators identified a new method used by thieves to locate and steal sophisticated vehicles which takes advantage of AirTag’s location tracking features.

Although the method of access to vehicles is conventional, The purpose of AirTag is to track a state-of-the-art car to the victim’s home, where it can be stolen when parked outside at night.

In recent months, the Police have investigated five incidents in which the suspects used airtags in high-tech vehicle thefts.

Thieves attack any particularly valuable vehicle they find in public places and parking lots, place an AirTag in an area out of sight, like on the trailer hitch or on the fuel tank, in the hope that it won’t be discovered by the car owner.

Thieves cannot disable Apple’s anti-tracking features that alert users when an unknown AirTag nearby is tracking their location, but not all victims act upon the notification or own an iPhone.

Police hope that, in the future, AirTags will be used on a larger scale in an increasing number of vehicle thefts.

Police have encouraged vehicle owners to park in a locked garage if possible and regularly inspect their vehicles for trackers, especially if they receive a notification of an unknown AirTag, and have released two public information videos related to the growing problem.
