They will repatriate 20 migrants killed in an accident in southeastern Mexico

After 23 days of the accident of the trailer in which more than 150 migrants were traveling, which occurred in the southeastern state of Chiapas, 18 bodies from Guatemala and 2 from the Dominican Republic will be repatriated in the next few hours, official sources reported.

Everything is ready so that before the end of 2021, the 20 bodies that were in the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) of the municipalities of Pijijiapan, Tuxtla and Tonalá are delivered to their relatives in their countries.

So far, 10 bodies of migrants have been repatriated to their place of origin, 8 from Guatemala and 2 from the Dominican Republic.

The Guatemalan consulate and the Dominican Republic embassy in Mexico are working with the Mexican authorities to coordinate the return of the 20 bodies, the Guatemalan consulate reported in a statement.

As for the Guatemalans, they have not informed exactly whether they will all be sent by air to this country, since there are two bodies that will take communities in the jungle that borders the border of Mexico, very close to the municipality of Marqués de Comilla, in Chiapas. .

In the case of the two bodies from the Dominican Republic, a land trip from Tuxtla to Mexico City and then by air from Mexico City to the Dominican capital, Santo Domingo, is planned.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala reported "that there is nothing for now", but in Mexico officials assured that they had already contacted the funeral service to transfer the bodies and preparations began very early.

They also reported that there are still nine bodies that have not been identified and that they are sheltered in the Semefo de Pijijiapan and Tonalá, they explained.

Families from Guatemala and El Salvador who are looking for their relatives say they have difficulties entering Mexico and searching among the hospitals for their injured relatives, and presume that the unidentified could be them.

Three weeks after the accident that occurred on December 9, there are still 22 hospitalized migrants, mostly from Guatemala. Of them, 11 are in state "serious", 9 are "delicate" and 2 with a forecast of "very serious", reported the Ministry of Health.

At least 56 people died in the accident of the truck transporting undocumented migrants and a hundred were injured, mostly Central Americans and also Dominicans.

The trailer where the undocumented migrants were traveling collided with the wall of a pedestrian bridge, according to the report from the Chiapas Prosecutor’s Office.

After the impact, the box was left without the roof and then overturned to one side and, as a result of the collision, dozens of migrants were killed instantly.
