the call center

The youths were last seen between May 20 and 22, according to the complaints filed. They had in common that they worked in a call center. The authorities had initially identified seven missing persons: Carlos Benjamín, Arturo, Jesús Alfredo, Mayra Karina, Jorge Miguel and the brothers Itzel Abigail and Carlos David. However, this Thursday the prosecution confirmed that the whereabouts of another call center employee is also unknown: Juan Antonio, 34 years old.

The call center is in the same area where the discovery of human remains was reported.. According to the first inquiries, the call center would be involved in illegal activities such as fraud, although this was rejected by relatives of the disappeared, who accused the authorities of criminalizing the victims. In turn, the local press published that marijuana, a cloth and a cleaning rag with apparent blood stains were found in the place, as well as documents on the alleged fraudulent sale of vacation plans.

Disappearances on the rise

Mexico registers more than 340,000 murders, some 100,000 disappeared and 52,000 unidentified bodies. Most of these cases are attributed to disputes between criminal gangs, since the launch of a controversial military anti-drug offensive in December 2006.

Jalisco, where the 45 bodies were found, is the state with the highest number of missing persons, with more than 15,000, according to federal government figures at the end of 2022.. In recent years, in different areas of the state, human remains were found distributed in bags or clandestine graves.

According to local media, only in the first two months of this year the bodies of 33 people were found in five clandestine graves in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara. The Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), one of the most powerful in Mexico and engaged in disputes with other gangs, operates in that area.

Without going any further, the heads of three people were abandoned this Monday in front of a military installation in a resort in Cancun in the Mexican Caribbean, according to security sources. In addition to the human remains, a message on a blanket addressed to the CJNG was found at the site. After the discovery, an intense mobilization was carried out in Cancun.

Social pact

In this context of violence, Delia Quiroa, mother seeker of the “10 de marzo” collective, proposed in a letter to the leaders of the cartels the signing of a “Social Pact to Prevent and Eradicate the Disappearance of People in Mexico and Promote Peace.” The activist is looking for her brother who has been missing since March 2014.

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, supported Quiroa’s proposal on Tuesday. “I agree, hopefully and peace will be achieved, that is what we all want, that there be no violence, that there be no homicides, that there are no attacks because it affects everyone,” said the president during his morning press conference.

López Obrador urged criminals to behave “like good citizens” and asserted that “there are always ways out for those who do not want to use violence,” while indirectly referring to their social programs: “I am sure, it is hypothetical, that and fewer and fewer young people are arrested in criminal activities.”
