The controversy surrounding the captaincy in Pakistan cricket continues to grow. Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has called for only one captain to be appointed in all three formats. Furthermore, Afridi believes that the new captain of the Pakistan cricket team should have at least three years. Earlier, Babar Azam had quit the captaincy of the Pakistan cricket team in all three formats after poor performances in the World Cup. After Babar, Shaheen Afridi was appointed captain in the limited-overs format while the command of the Test team went to Shaun Masood.
But even after the change of captain, nothing changed in the fate of the Pakistan team. Pakistan lost the Test series against Australia 0-3. Pakistan then suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat against New Zealand in the T20 series. Afridi was already not in favor of appointing Shaheen as the limited overs captain. Afridi said, “The Pakistan Cricket Board should appoint only one captain in all three formats.” There is no need to make him vice-captain. This message should be clear to all players as to who commands the team.”
The captain should have time
Afridi further said: “The captain and the team management should get a three-year contract.” The longer the time, the better a team can be prepared. If you don’t give time, the captain and management will be under pressure to prove themselves quickly. It shouldn’t happen. You can’t build a good team quickly. If Hafeez has a chance, he should not be judged on one series. Hafeez should be given a full chance to prove himself. The same applies to the team captain.”
