“The World Cup book? I'm taking notes..."

The Selection wrote one of the most amazing pages in the history of basketball last summer, in Berlin (Germany), by hanging the gold medal in the Eurobasket when nobody, not even the most optimistic, trusted it. It was almost impossible. Due to the absences of a Spain in transition (the Gasols had withdrawn the previous summer) and due to the presence of almost (if not all) the great European stars in the tournament. An indescribable feat to which Víctor Charneco puts lyrics in The unexpected goldedited by Córner and on sale since June 6.

The director of communications of the FEB presented in society this Tuesday the book. At the FNAC event in Callao, he was escorted by Rudy Fernández and Jorge Garbajosa: the captain of the National Team took over the prologue and the president of the FEB and FIBA Europe, the epilogue. Each chapter of the work focuses on a game and one of the players because, throughout that summer, each one had their moment. “It is not just a book about a sporting feat, but rather a vision from within it,” says Garbajosa.. “It reflects very well what happened. With him I relived many things, great feelings”, continues Rudy.

It is a victory that will never be forgotten.. And he wanted to put words to that unexpected victory, which was a life lesson. I also wanted to show how a team was formed that has a solid and recognizable DNA, which transmits values that readers can incorporate into their lives: Rudy’s commitment and leadership, Lorenzo’s heart, Willy’s effort, Scariolo’s temperance…”, comments Charneco, who is ready to get down to work with the next one, the World Cup: “I’m taking notes”.

The presentation of the book takes place two days before another presentation, that of the National Team this Thursday for that intercontinental tournament, where Spain defends the crown won in China in 2019 and to which it travels as Eurobasket champion and number one in the FIBA ranking. “The objective? Another gold, that clear”, says Usman Garuba, one of the 16 players summoned by Scariolo in a list of 16 that will end up being reduced to 12.

The new Oklahoma City Thunder power forward was not the only continental champion to accompany Charneco. Darío Brizuela, Jaime Fernández, Sergio Llull, Jaime Pradilla, Alberto Díaz, Víctor Claver and Xabi López-Arostegui supported the author in the presentation of a book that everyone hopes will have its second part after September 10 when Spain lifts its third trophy as world champion in its history.
