The Argentine women’s soccer team scored another very good victory early Monday morning by beating New Zealand 2-0 in Hamilton, in one of the three friendlies it will play during the FIFA Date in February. Mariana Larroquette and Aldana Cometti scored the goals for Germán Portanova’s side, who had thrashed Chile 4-0 last week in their first appearance in Oceania.
Argentina opened the scoring 17 minutes into the first half through Larroquette, who put pressure on a defender and scored on the rebound, after a good play by Lorena Benítez. With the advantage, the Albiceleste team dominated development and settled the match as the game ended thanks to a header from Cometti after a corner from the right by Yamila Rodríguez.
“It was a very tough game. We tried to play equally, to find the gaps and luckily we leave with a victory,” Vanina Correa, goalkeeper and captain of the National Team, explained after the game. “We try to get to the World Cup in the best way. We must continue working to achieve a level of play that is ours when it comes to facing the group stage,” Correa completed in statements collected by the official account of Argentina.
After the win against Chile and today’s victory against New Zealand, Portanova’s team will close their tour next Thursday, again against the New Zealand team, in search of optimizing their preparation for the World Cup. The Selection directed by Portanova will integrate Group G together with Italy, Sweden and South Africa, while New Zealand -one of the teams that will be local in the 2023 World Cup- will share Group A with Norway, the Philippines and Switzerland.
