In this context, they reported that most of the excess deaths, that is, 84%, were concentrated in the Southeast Asian, Europe Y America. And that about 68% of “excess deaths” are concentrated in only 10 countries. “Middle-income countries account for 81% of the 14.9 million excess deaths over the 24-month period, with high and low incomes,” they added.

The estimates also included a breakdown by age and sex. In this regard, they confirmed that the overall number of deaths was higher for men than for womendetailing that 57% of fatal victims were male and 43% female.

The number of fatalities was established by calculating the difference between the number of deaths that have occurred and the number that would be expected in the absence of the pandemic.

Directly associated deaths due to the disease and those attributable to failures in health systems and society were taken into account.
