The White Sox lose to Detroit and are eliminated in their division

Dylan Cease pitched six scoreless innings, but the White Sox bullpen was outmatched and Chicago was eliminated from the AL Central in a 4-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

Jonathan Schoop hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth and Chicago suffered its sixth loss to hand the division title to Cleveland. The Guardians had a big lead in the game against Texas when the announcement went live.

The White Sox, who won the division last season in manager Tony La Russa’s first year back, fell to 76-77. La Russa has not been with the team since late August due to a medical problem and Venezuelan Miguel Cairo has served as interim manager.

Andrew Chafin (2-3) pitched a scoreless inning for Detroit. Gregory Soto earned his 28th save.

For the Tigres, Puerto Rican Javier Báez 5-0. Venezuelans Harold Castro 4-3, Víctor Reyes 3-1 with an RBI.

For the White Sox, Venezuelan Elvis Andrus 4-0. Cubans Yoán Moncada 4-1 with a run scored and an RBI, Yasmani Grandal 3-0.
