The Weeknd records with Rosalía and will have Jim Carrey as a guest in a new song

The Canadian artist The Weeknd has just released a song with the Spanish Rosalía and is already embarking on a new project: a tribute to the old FM radio of the 1980s, with an unexpected guest, the comedian Jim Carrey.

“La Fama” came out just two months ago. The Weeknd sings in Spanish with Rosalía the sorrows and spell of glamor and success, which can engulf any artist.

Now it is about paying tribute precisely to stars who embodied that worldwide fame, so dangerous. Artists like Michael Jackson or Prince, who continue to inspire new generations.

“Dawn FM” (Alba FM), Weeknd’s new work, it came out in the first week of January. A daring gesture again, after the singer released “After Hours” in March 2020, when the world was confined and musical stars kept their aces up their sleeves.

The Weeknd proposes in “Dawn FM” a dreamlike and surreal universe. And what better buddy for that task than Jim Carrey, Canadian and American, interpreter of films like “The Mask” or “The Truman Show”.

Carrey kicks off the record by voicing a hypothetical FM radio presenter (on an imaginary frequency, 103.5).

The music starts right away, clearly disco club.

Imagine “a guy locked in his car, in the middle of purgatory, listening to the FM radio while waiting for the traffic jam to end”, Jim Zelechowski, artistic director of Island / Def Jam, told AFP.

“It is a metaphor of the current time, people waiting for the light to return” adds this person in charge.

The meeting between the two artists could not be more surreal, and more Angelino. Jim Carrey and Weeknd discover on social media that they are neighbors in Los Angeles. “We started looking out the window, with our telescopes, and we discovered each other,” explains the musician in GQ magazine.

In his role as a DJ, Jim Carrey talks about “Purple Rain” or “When Doves Cry,” Prince songs that are authentic hymns from the 1980s.

“On the album you can hear drum machines that are characteristic of Prince in ‘Purple Rain’ or ‘Lovesexy'” details the artistic director of Island. And there are also allusions to Depeche Mode, or to Stevie Wonder.

The big influence, however, is the Michael Jackson of the “Thriller” era, with “the loudest songs at the beginning and the softest songs later,” explains Jim Zelechowski.

“Michael [Jackson] is someone I admire. She is not a real person, do you understand what I mean? When I started in music I aspired to be like him ”, confesses in GQ Abel Tesfaye, the real name of The Weeknd.

In the same way that horror movie actor Vincent Price put his cavernous voice in Michael Jackson’s song “Thriller,” The Weeknd now appeals to Carrey’s complicity and his throaty voice. And also to the musical producer and composer Quincy Jones, who worked with Michael Jackson and who introduces the second part of the album, more melancholic.

“It is a deep, thoughtful album, and at the same time it is a pop work, in the style of Michael Jackson”, summarizes Jim Zelechowski.

The Weeknd is 31 years old. His collaborations with artists like Lana del Rey have drawn praise. “Abel has his own artistic path. He bears the mark of the greats, of the artists who will last ”, the British Elton John recently assured in Variety.
