The Vuelta will have a special red jersey in the Netherlands

El ganador del Tour de Francia y de la Vuelta a España Joop Zoetemelk posa con el maillot especial de líder de La Vuelta que el primero de la general lucirá en las etapas de la Gran Salida en Países Bajos.

This Thursday, La Vuelta began its particular countdown to the Grand Start in Utrecht (The Netherlands) on August 18. On the occasion of the 100 days to the start of the race, various events have been held and several novelties have been unveiled for the passage of La Vuelta through the Netherlands.

One of these novelties is the presentation of a new red jersey that the leader of the race will wear during the stages of La Vuelta in the Netherlands. The garment is already in the hands of the mayor of Utrecht Sharon Dijksma after it was given to her by a champion of the Tour de France and La Vuelta like the Dutchman Joop Zoetemelk.

This special jersey, designed by Mattijs van Bergen, includes the logos of Breda, ‘s-Hertongenbosch and Utrecht, the three cities that will host the Spanish round, as well as the logos of the provinces of Utrecht and North Brabant, through which the race will pass. In this way, the leader of the general will wear this historic jersey on Dutch soil, since it is the first time that a leader’s jersey has been designed for a host country of the great start.

The presentation ceremony took place this Thursday in the city of Breda, where a clock was started with the countdown to La Vuelta and where a group led by Joop Zoetemelk came out to wear the garment from there to Utrecht via Oosteind and ‘s-Hertongenbosch.

For Javier Guillén, general director of La Vuelta, this Thursday’s event “has been a unique presentation, where everything that makes the Netherlands so suitable to host an event like La Vuelta has come together. The cycling atmosphere, the fans of all ages and the enthusiasm that this sport arouses here is impressive. I can’t wait to start the race.”
