The laureate, veteran and renowned Dominican visual artist Vincent Pimentel He died this Monday, May 29, 2023 in France due to a heart attack. He was 76 years old.
Through Twitter, the Minister of Culture, Milagros Germán Olalla, confirmed the death of Pimentel, who in 2021 was awarded by that public institution with the National Prize for Visual Artsin an act held at the Ramón Oviedo Gallery.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Culture, we deeply regret the loss of the outstanding visual artist Vicente Pimentel. His departure leaves an irreparable void in the art world. Pimentel captivated us with his innovative work, challenging limits and exploring new dimensions,” the official wrote.
And he added: “His artistic merits will always remind us of his valuable contribution to contemporary art. We send our condolences to his loved ones. May he rest in peace.”
Pimentel studied at the National School of Fine Arts of Santo Domingo and at the École d’Art et d’Architecture in France and had important exhibitions in cities such as New York, Chicago, Paris, Stockholm and his hometown, Santo Domingo, according to the portal artisticord.com
In 1982, Pimentel also obtained the “Ville de Vitry” prize in France and some of his works remain in the Museum of Art and Technology in Florida, the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain in Paris, the National Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo and the Pompidou Collection in France.
