The famous classical singer Dr. Prabha Atre died on Saturday, January 13, due to a heart attack at her home in Pune. The 92 year old Dr. Atre represented the Kirana Gharana of classical music. He has been honored with all three Padma Awards by the Government of India. According to sources, “Atre suffered a heart attack while sleeping in his apartment. He was rushed to a private hospital in Kothrud district where he was pronounced dead at 5.30am.
The source said that some members of Dr. Atre's family live abroad. Therefore, his last rites will be performed only after his arrival. Dr. Atre was born on September 13, 1932. In addition to being a classical singer, she was also a researcher, musician and author.
Dr. Atre earned a doctorate in music after graduating in science and law. In January 2022, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest civilian award. Previously, he was also awarded Padma Shri in 1990 and Padma Bhushan in 2002.
Dr. Atre has fought against stereotypes throughout her life to make classical music accessible to the masses. If she wanted to, she could become a successful doctor. But he followed his heart and chose music. She vowed to continue singing until her last breath. He completed his science studies at Fergusson College, Pune and later graduated from Law College, but considered music as his spiritual practice.
After receiving the country's second highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan, in 2022, she had said in an interview with Bhasha, “I studied law and science and had not even dreamed of becoming a singer.” My parents were academics and the My mother's illness brought music into our home. She said: “As a seeker, I can never be satisfied because there is no end to learning.” I want to sing until my last breath and also work on other aspects of music.
