The US government is one of the largest BTC holders in the world

Bitcoin (BTC) holders come in a variety of shapes and sizes. BTC’s adoption curve has already reached a point where listed companies and even governments are venturing into it. Microstrategy is the largest listed BTC holder and regularly appears in the Bitcoin news after accumulating new bitcoins. El Salvador even converted bitcoin into legal tender in 2021 and now also owns a considerable amount of loot. Despite this, few people will be aware of the fact that the US government is one of the largest bitcoin holders in the world right now.

US government owns $6 billion in BTC

On-chain analyst Will Clemente revealed in a tweet that the US government currently holds a total of 205,500 BTC. At the current bitcoin price, this fortune is worth just over $6 billion.

At the end of November, you could read that the US Department of Justice had seized more than 50,000 BTC from a bitcoin trader named James Zhong a year earlier. Zhong had stolen this wealth in 2012 from Silk Road, an illegal online marketplace. Before this, it also managed to seize 70,000 BTC from Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht. In addition, it has Department of Justice (DOJ) seized $3.6 billion in bitcoin last year related to the 2016 Bitfinex hack.

You could also read recently that the US government had started to liquidate the huge bitcoin position it seized from Zhong. As of March 14, 9,861 BTC has already been sold and the remaining 41,490 BTC will be liquidated in four moments during the course of this calendar year.

With the US government’s substantial bitcoin holding, it has a significant ‘head start’ over Microstrategy’s bitcoin assets. Indeed, Microstrategy currently owns 140,000 BTC, which has a current value of just over $4 billion.

The largest bitcoin holder in the world is Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous brain behind the Bitcoin network, with 1 million BTC. Grayscale Bitcoin Trust succeeds the legendary founder with a total of 650,000 BTC. Others on the list are of course crypto exchanges such as Binance and Coinbase.
