Covid-19 and its strict restrictions continue to wreak havoc on world sport. Again, a totally unusual solution has been experienced in South America. This time, it happened in the match between Brazil and Argentina which was being played in Sao Paulo, for the eighth date of the CONMEBOL Qualifiers for the World Cup. In just five minutes of the game, the health authorities have entered the field, thus stopping the game, seeking to deport the 4 Argentine players who arrived from England. Which are: Emiliano Martínez, Emiliano Buendía, Giovani Lo Celso and Cristián Romero. Three of them on the court, while Buendía, an Aston Villa player, has not been called up.
The reason why the health authorities have entered the field and stopped the meeting was because people arriving from England to Brazil must comply with a strict quarantine. Something that these four players did not meet. Two hours before the game, the police arrived at the hotel where Lionel Scaloni’s Argentine team was, where they tried to deport these four players or at least not allow them to play the game. Still, they got on the bus and everything seemed settled: They were going to play.
CONMEBOL and AFA have confirmed and made official the suspension of the match between both teams.
