The UN demanded that Peru investigate the deaths in protests

The UN Secretary General, Anthony Guterresurged the Peruvian authorities to carry out “prompt, effective and impartial investigations” on the deaths recorded in the protests that have shaken the country for several weeks demanding the resignation of the president Dina Boluarte and the closure of Congress.

In a message issued by his spokeswoman Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres asked “to avoid the stigmatization of the victims” and reiterated its “great concern” about the situation in the country and the number of deaths produced in the midst of the repression of the demonstrations.

Guterres also called for moderation to avoid a new escalation of violence, reiterated his call on the Peruvian government to comply with its international commitments on human rights.

“Even in times of public emergency, measures that suspend the right to peaceful assembly must be limited to what is strictly required by the situation and be consistent with other obligations under international law,” said the statement from the United Nations Secretary General.
