The Turbulent Life of a Boxing Legend Hits the Big Screen

Overcoming Adversity: The Claressa Shields Story

Claressa Shields, widely regarded as the greatest boxer of all time, is set to have her inspiring story told on the big screen. ‘The Fire Inside’ premieres in the United States on December 25, shedding light on the remarkable journey of this American boxing sensation.

A Boxing Legacy

Shields boasts an impressive record, having won all four belts (WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO) in two weight classes. Her amateur career saw her achieve 64 victories, with only one defeat. She won Olympic gold in London 2012 at just 17 years old and repeated the feat in Rio 2016. Turning professional in November 2016, Shields has since fought 15 fights, winning all 15, with three by knockout.

From Rio to Hollywood

Following her success in Rio 2016, Shields received an email from Universal Studios, expressing interest in making a film about her life. After a year of negotiations, the project was greenlit, with Rachel Morrison directing and Ryan Destiny playing the lead role. The script was penned by Barry Jenkins, who won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay for ‘Moonlight’.

A Story of Resilience

‘The Fire Inside’ tells the story of Shields’ journey to becoming the most decorated boxer in history. The film explores her tough childhood, economic struggles, and experiences with gender discrimination and sexual abuse. Shields hopes that by sharing her story, she can inspire others to overcome their own challenges. “I want people to leave the theater feeling inspired, knowing that it’s okay to be yourself and believe in what you do, no matter how long it takes.”

If I went through all that and didn’t give up, you have no excuse. This film is not just my story: it is a message for everyone: you can overcome anything.
