The Tron network appears to be extremely popular among terrorist organizations

Since October, several terrorist organizations have been openly waging war against Israel. But this is not easy because it requires a lot of money. Terrorist organizations fighting against Israel use crypto to finance themselves. Since governments have been closely monitoring crypto wallets, terrorists have had a much harder time. In response, they started using a different blockchain.

Tron is widely used by Hamas

Reuters writes this based on its own investigation into seizures. The crypto industry has not escaped terrorists either. Terrorists have been working on blockchains since 2021, the business newspaper concludes based on interviews with seven blockchain researchers.

A marked shift is said to have taken place as Bitcoin (BTC) is no longer as popular among these criminals as it once was. Instead, Tron (TRX) is now more popular.

According to Mriganka Pattnaik of blockchain research agency Merkle Science, Tron is much cheaper, faster and more stable to use than Bitcoin. This company claims to have law enforcement agencies from the US, UK and Singapore as customers.

Israel’s National Counter-Terrorism Financing Office (NBCTF) claims to have frozen 143 wallets on the Tron blockchain between July 2021 and October 2023 because they were allegedly involved in terrorist organizations and terrorist financing, according to Reuters. Tron is now said to be more popular than Bitcoin – only 30 wallets of the latter were confiscated.

It is unknown how many wallets in total have been identified that were involved in terrorist attacks. In any case, 39 wallets are said to belong to Hezbollah and 26 to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

USDT is also popular with terrorists

One of the reasons for this is that Tron supports other tokens than just indigenous TRX tokens. We should think in particular about stablecoins. According to Reuters, Tether’s USDT is the most popular on this blockchain. This popularity was also evident when Tether announced that it had also frozen a large number of wallets on several occasions in collaboration with law enforcement.

Nevertheless, the use of cryptocurrencies by terrorists is greatly exaggerated in the media. The majority of money comes to these organizations through the traditional financial system, including through sophisticated scams.
