The Tesla Model 3 is a hit, it is more popular than all the premium competitors

Sales of the Tesla Model 3 are exploding in Germany, even surpassing competing sedans such as the BMW Series 3, the Audi A4 or the Mercedes Class C, which are however produced by local car manufacturers.

The Tesla Model 3 has met with immediate success since its release in 2017, so much so that it became the best-selling electric car in the world in 2020. In France, Tesla’s sedan is also enjoying impressive success, as it dominated this summer sales of electric vehicles.

In Germany, where there are a large number of competing manufacturers, the Tesla Model 3 has over the years made a place for itself among other rival sedans. In September, Tesla’s car is said to have even surpassed combined sales of major domestic models, such as the BMW Series 3, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class, as reported by Wirtschafts Woche, which cites data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

Tesla Model 3 far surpasses other German sedans

With 6,828 Model 3s registered in September, Tesla was well ahead of Audi, which in total only sold 900 units of its six main lines of cars equipped with combustion engines. For its part, BMW has sold some 3,000 Series 3 models, and Mercedes has sold nearly 2,200 Class C and Class CLA models. The three German manufacturers have therefore reached reached three 6,100 new sales, 700 vehicles less than the Tesla Model 3.

Despite these excellent sales, Volkswagen still dominates sales in Germany with its ID.3 and e-Up. Tesla’s results are still impressive, since it must be remembered that the cheapest Model 3 is more expensive an Audi A4, a BMW Series 3 or even a Mercedes Class C / CLA.

Wirtschafts Woche adds that in September, 41% fewer petrol cars were sold in Germany than in the same period of the previous year, while diesel-powered models decreased by 54%. In contrast, sales of hybrids increased by 11%, plug-in hybrids by 14% and fully electric cars by 59%. Tesla’s sales exploded in the third quarter of 2021 despite the chip shortage, and the US maker is now expected to surpass its sales record this year. These will soon be stimulated by the opening of the new Gigafactory in Berlin.
