The Suns win, but they don’t convince

The one who was supposed to be the ogre of the West does not scare anyone. For now. The Phoenix Suns have done what they had to do first, regain the field advantage they lost on the first day at home. With tonight’s victory in Los Angeles they take the lead in the tie (2-1) and tomorrow they could give the series a deadly blow if they get another win away from Phoenix. And this team is there for bigger goals than being a perfect first-round machine. But the truth is that at the moment they are far from the super team that we might think.

The Clippers, who have fewer and fewer arguments left to see themselves as candidates to overcome the series, have taken them to the extreme to take today’s victory. A team in which Paul George has not played a game and in which Kawhi Leonard has not been in tonight either. The guard hurt his knee in the first game, played through pain in the second and was left out in the third. And it’s not clear that he’s going to be in the room. With these wickers, the logical thing was to think of a relatively simple match for the entire Suns, but they had to sweat the victory until the last second.

In the first half, things were fairly even, with neither of the two rivals going more than 6 points behind, but in the third quarter a couple of favorable partials for the visitors placed their advantage in double figures. It was then that it seemed that the thing would fall on the side of the Suns under its own weight. And it is true that he ended up falling on his side, but because Devin Booker is playing at his best possible level. After scoring 38 points in his team’s first victory, today he went up to 45, with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Kevin Durant got to 28, albeit missing some big shots in the closing minutes, while Chris Paul was 11 with 5/18 shooting from the field.

Opposite, Norman Powell completed one of the best games of his career with 40 points (his best score in the playoffs) and 14/22 shooting. And Russell Westbrook went to 30 and 12 assists. The point guard pushed with everything, aware of the lack of leaders on the track, and that push was about to lead his team to an improbable victory. Two free throws from Westbrook put his team within 3 points with 1:44 remaining. Then a 0-6 run for the Suns seemed to close the match, but a 3+1 from Powell left it at 120-125. From there, the exchange of free throws by the Suns and desperate attacks by the Clippers did not work for the locals, who had a triple by Bones Hayland the opportunity to get within 2 after Paul failed in a double game from the staff line, but the ball went through the hoop and ended up going wide. Despite the effort, the Los Angeles team is down 2-1 and needs Kawhi to be in the fourth game anyway if he wants to stay alive in these playoffs.
