The president of the House of Representatives of the United States, Kevin McCarthy, has met this Wednesday with the president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing Wen, a meeting that he has assured will bring "more peace and stability to the world".
During a press conference between the two after the meeting, the American reiterated that "America’s support for the people of Taiwan will remain firm, unwavering and bipartisan".
The meeting in California, which has included congressmen from both the Republican and Democratic parties, took place taking advantage of Tsai’s visit as part of her trip to Central America, in which she has visited Guatemala and Belize and during the which also stopped in New York on the way out.
China has repeatedly come out against this meeting, but McCarthy has insisted that "no need for retaliation"in response to repeated warnings from the Chinese government about possible negative consequences of this meeting.
The president has affirmed that this meeting means verifying that the Taiwanese "we are not isolated nor alone"and took advantage of the meeting to remind the congressmen "Taiwan’s commitment to uphold and uphold a peaceful ‘status quo’ so that the people of Taiwan continue to live in a free and open society".
"We are stronger when we are together"has sentenced. "Taiwan tries to be a reliable partner to the rest of the world, a point of stability in the region, and a force for good.".
The meeting took place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, a former president to whom both have wanted to pay tribute and have described as "great man and great politician" for his role in the relationship between the two countries.
The Chinese government has harshly criticized the United States in recent months for the latest official visits to the island of Taiwan by US officials, the most relevant of which was the one made in early August 2022 by the then House Speaker of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, who held the meeting.
In a statement, collected by ‘The Hill’, Pelosi has celebrated "its leadership, bipartisan participation and its distinguished and historic location".
China condemns the meeting and warns of consequences
Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang has condemned and rejected "strongly" the meeting through a statement this Thursday, assuring that it is "a serious violation of the one-China principle".
"(The meeting) violates China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and sends the egregious wrong signal to the separatist forces of ‘independent Taiwan’"has added.
Rate US stocks "provocative" and insists that "they have crossed the line" and have warned of the possible consequences: "In response to this egregious and wrongful action by the United States and Taiwan, China will take firm and absolute measures to defend our sovereignty and territorial integrity.".
