The Spaniards on the Tour: three victories and two top 10 overall

The Tour de France comes to an end with the arrival of the peloton in Paris. An edition in which Spain managed to break its drought of five years and 100 stages without winning a stage thanks to the victory of Pello Bilbao on the tenth day of the race. A list of winners to which Ion Izagirre and Carlos Rodríguez also signed up in the following days. The one from Ineos surprised with his performance in his first appearance in the gala event in which it ended fifth overall and where he came to be in third position. At the entrance to Paris, the best classified was Aranburu in 17th position, thus ending the gala race. This was the performance of the Spanish representation in the 2023 Tour:

Carlos Rodriguez (5th): The best of the Spaniards on this Tour. In his first year competing on the tough French course, he surprised from an early age with his performance that earned him fifth overall. An edition in which he took a stage against Vingegaard and Pogacar and, furthermore, in which he had serious aspirations to be on the podium on the Champs-Élysées together with the two greats.

Pello Bilbao (6th): After one hundred stages and 1,816 days, the man from Bahrain broke the losing streak that Spain was going through in the premier cycling competition. On the tenth day, the man from Guernica took the victory on a day he will not forget. In addition, he arrived in Paris in sixth position, thus finishing off a great performance in this 2023 Tour de France. A year in which he himself admitted that he “had not raced in the general classification”.

Jonathan Castroviejo (15th): The man from Ineos arrived at the appointment after being the Spanish time trial champion. During this Tour, he focused at all times on helping and protecting Carlos Rodríguez so that he could fight for the top positions, being a team man at all times. Next year will be his last as a professional since in 2024 he announced his retirement.

Mikel Landa (19th): The Basque always lived a very complicated Tour in the French competition. He himself acknowledged that he had not been comfortable at any time, finishing more than an hour behind the winner Jonas Vingegaard. In the eighth stage he suffered a fall six kilometers from reaching the finish line that made him lose a lot of time compared to the general.

Gorka Izagirre (37th): The Gipuzkoan from Movistar tried to ensure that his team could take some stage in this 2023. The fall and abandonment of Enric Mas reduced the chances of victory one day, although Izagirre himself was active with some leak.

Ion Izagirre (45th): The one carried out by the Cofidis team in 2023 was a great edition. Its objective was to take a stage and it was achieved on day number 12, entering the Belleville-en-Beaujolais finish line alone. He tried to take the second win on stage 19, but I couldn’t respond to the attacks at a time when he had just enough strength.

Alex Aranburu (52nd): The one from Movistar has not had the best Tour where it was expected that he could have a leading role in some of the mountain breakaways. The fact that his team was left with few riders at the end of the Tour meant that they did not have opportunities to filter him in the breakaways.

Marc Soler (56th): The 2023 edition will always be remembered for the performance of the Emirates player helping his teammate Pogacar climb the Col de la Loze when the Slovenian claimed “to be dead”. In this Tour he has confirmed himself as a team man and the trusted man of the runner-up of this Tour.

Omar Fraile (60th): He arrived at the appointment with the band of being the last winner of a stage in the French round until the victory of Pello Bilbao. Fraile helped Carlos Rodríguez at all times to keep up with the favorites and on the penultimate day he helped the man from Granada to rejoin the peloton after the crash suffered by the man from Almuñécar.

Juanpe López (74th): Juanpe López’s first participation in a Tour de France after his great performance in the Giro. In the end, he has not been able to get a stage in this edition, but he will try for future rounds for the young cyclist.
