The Spaniards on the Tour: More abandons, but Landa and Rodríguez excite

Heads and tails for the Spanish in the first stage of the 2023 Tour de France. On the one hand, the bitter abandonment of Enric Mas at the first change, because of a hard fall. A real pity, since one of the national assets for the podium in Paris says goodbye as soon as the race begins. On the other, the exciting performance by Mikel Landa and Carlos Rodríguez, who remained with the great favorites despite the fact that the explosive route was not ideal for their characteristics.

Michael Landa (12th): the player from Alava, highly motivated on home soil, put in a great performance. He wasted no time with the main favourites, despite losing the wheel to Pogacar and Vingegaard in the final stretch of the Pike, which is quite a success for a stage as nervous and tricky as this one.

carlos rodriguez (13th): identical performance from Granada to that of Landa. Without a doubt, Carlos has already shown that he is more capable than anyone in Ineos to assume the role of leader. Bernal, despite showing good feelings, gave up more than 20 seconds in the final stretch. If he stays away from the falls, he can have a great Tour.

Alex Aranburu (16th): The Basque runner looked good, but he lacked a bit of strength to see himself with the best, so he couldn’t even implement the option of a surprise attack. This Sunday he will have another great chance of victory in his homeland.

Luis Leon Sanchez (38th): he reached the finish line in a third group, in the same group as Aranburu, only further back. He will have to wait for a favorable day for leaks as the days go by. Now is the time to avoid mishaps.

bilbao hair (40th): a real pity about Pello, because he was in the best group until he suffered a puncture at the last levels. He decided to continue without changing bikes despite the loss of pressure in his front wheel, and that prevented him from grabbing the group of favorites at the last moment.

Jonathan Castroviejo (42nd): the recent Spanish time trial champion had a great stage in which he lost 48 seconds. He was always close to Bernal and Carlos, to assist them in case it was necessary.

Juanpe Lopez (43rd): crossed the finish line immediately after ‘Castro’. He was visible for many minutes in the main group, but gave up on the last climb. He needs high mountains and less explosive routes to shine. He lost 52 to the winner.

david de la cruz (48th): the Astana cyclist left the finish line for more than 2 minutes. These types of stages are not for him. He will have to wait for his moment to filter into leaks.

Ion Izagirre (53rd): something more was expected from an Ion who knew these roads like the back of his hand, but who lacked legs at the moment of truth, as he himself explained at the end of the stage.

Gorka Izagirre (54th): the Movistar rider crossed the finish line just behind his brother. Both left more than 3 minutes on arrival.

Marc Soler (71st): good work by the Catalan to protect Pogacar in the decisive section of the stage. Before the last peak he disconnected to save energy that he may need in the days to come.

omar friar (82nd): the Basque, 9:42 behind the winner, led one of the numerous groups that arrived off the hook at the finish line in Bilbao.

antonio pedrero (104th): the man from Movistar disconnected after Mas fell and reached the finish line after more than 11 minutes. Without his race leader, he will be able to enjoy more freedom to seek stage wins.

enric mas (withdrawal): the Spaniard has become the first abandoner of this 110th edition of the Tour, being the only rider who could not finish the first stage. About 20 km from the finish line, he suffered a hard fall on the descent of the Vivero, for which he showed serious gestures of pain in his left arm. Carapaz was also involved in the same action, but managed to cross the finish line.
