The solidarity project of the Euroleague with Türkiye

The largest earthquakes in Türkiye caused a huge global impact. And also huge shows of solidarity across the planet. Basketball was no exception: the Euroleague quickly gave support to the country and allowed all the facilities for the matches that were played on Turkish soil to change dates and readjust the calendar, with the rivals that were visiting quickly accepting those adjustments. A demonstration of support between teams and institutions that allowed these matches to be played and that, in the case of basketball, everything would develop as well as it could, given the circumstances.

But that has not been the only support that the Euroleague has given to Turkey. As many as 11 cities were affected by the quake, including Hatay province. And the Turkish Basketball Solidarity and Education Foundation (BIDEV) soon started making long-term plans. to help the thousands of families affected, many of them homeless after the disaster. This foundation is supported by the Euroleague, its members, clubs and associations. The project, called basketball villagewill help the installation of 100 equipped containers in an area of ​​11,397 square meters. Inside these containers are the basic housing furniture and the basic services necessary for day-to-day life.such as toilet, gas, water and internet.

Likewise, the Basketball Village It will also house specific social spaces for education, health and sports, including a basketball court, which should be fully operational and ready for the arrival of the first families during the month of April. The project will take place in Hatay, the province hardest hit by a natural disaster that claimed more than 50,000 lives. “I would like to thank once again the solidarity of the Euroleague Basketball family for their reaction and the support offered to those affected by this terrible event.”, stated Marshall Glickman, CEO of the EuroLeague. “Since the first earthquake struck, we have coordinated a general response to offer our support to all the victims who have lost their homes. I want to express my gratitude to Hasan Arat and his team at BIDEV for giving us the opportunity to collaborate with a foundation that has deep local roots and a project that will make a difference for hundreds of families.”.
