The Sandbox and the British Museum bring art and history to the Metaverse

On July 27 announced the Sandbox Metaverse development platform has announced that it is partnering with the British Museum to bring the latter to the Metaverse.

Creation of immersive experiences

According to the blog post, this new partnership aims to create new “immersive experiences” for users to discover world history.

The British Museum will generate a range of digital collectibles that reflect the museum’s diverse collections. These objects will be available in the Metaverse for users to explore and experience.

Sebastien Borget, the Chief Operating Officer and co-founder of The Sandbox, saw this as a great opportunity to share the museum’s collections with a new audience. He said the following:

This is a great opportunity for The Sandbox players, wherever they are, to learn about and enjoy the amazing collections of human history, art and culture in the British Museum.

Collaboration also includes laCollection

The collaboration also includes laCollection, a Web3 platform and licensing partner of the British Museum, which has previously collaborated with leading museum institutions around the world to bring art into the digital space.

The British Museum is now entering the Web3 space for the first time, but it’s not the first time a major museum has made its way into the metaverse. Previously, the Pompidou Center in France opened an exhibition featuring some of the world’s most sought-after NFT collections, such as CryptoPunks and Autoglyphs, as part of a permanent exhibition.

Other museums have also entered the NFT and Metaverse world. The Kharkiv Art Museum in Ukraine launched an NFT collection to raise funds for the preservation of their operation and cultural heritage. The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp in Belgium tokenized a classic masterpiece worth millions of euros.

In addition, the metaverse platform Decentraland organized last year’s Metaverse Art Week, featuring interactive exhibitions of digital art, including an immersive experience around the life and work of Frida Kahlo with never-before-seen digitized art.
