The rollout of iOS 17 is a little slower than that of iOS 16

Apple has revealed iOS 17 rollout details for the first time and the numbers show that the update to iOS 17 is slower compared to iOS 16.

Figures provided by Apple are based on devices traded in the App Store on February 4, 2024. Apple publishes this data via its developer website.

 

Regarding iPhones introduced in the last four years:

  • iOS 17: 76%
  • iOS 16: 20%
  • Back: 4%

In the set of all iPhones:

  • iOS 17: 66%
  • iOS 16: 23%
  • Back: 11%

Among the iPads introduced in the last four years:

  • iPadOS 17: 61%
  • iPadOS 16: 29%
  • Back: 10%

On all iPads:

  • iPadOS 17: 53%
  • iPadOS 16: 29%
  • Back: 18%

 

How does this compare to iOS 16?

According to Apple, the rollout of iOS 17 is significantly slower than that of iOS 16. At this point in February 2023, iOS 16 was installed on 81% of all modern iPhones and 72% of all iPhones.

On the other hand, adoption of iPadOS 17 exceeds that of iPadOS 16. During the same period, in February 2023, iPadOS 16 was installed on 53% of all modern iPads and 50% of all iPads.

Although iOS 17 has seen slower adoption compared to its predecessor, iPadOS 17 shows an opposite pattern, surpassing iPadOS 16’s adoption rate over the same period.
